Winemaker
I’ve been with Lamont’s for fifteen vintages, the last nine as winemaker. I was reflecting over a glass of 2003 Family Reserve the other day, just how much has changed and how so much is still the same.
The fundamentals preached to Corin Lamont by her father, Jack Mann, still have resonance today, with Corin remaining involved in tasting and blending trials.
I’ve realised just how much I’ve still got to learn, but since having been thrown in at the deep end I’ve learnt to swim.
I’m proud to continue the success Lamont’s has received with 282 medals; 37 gold, 70 silver, 175 bronze and 33 trophies across three shows; Perth, Mt Barker and Swan Valley including ‘Most Successful Small Producer’ ten times plus Ray Jordan’s ‘WA’s Best Small Winemaker (2002)’. Quite humbling for a boutique family owned producer.
I joined Lamont’s in 1996 as a vineyard hand while studying an associate degree in viticulture part time at Curtin University. (Little known fact, I actually got the job because Corin went to school with my Mum and Angela Mann and my Grandmother were lifelong friends!).
My first job was establishing the backblock Shiraz and so I have a special fondness for Swan Valley Shiraz- the 2007 vintage was my highlight.
I assumed full winemaking responsibility at the end of 2002 following my return from the Northern Hemisphere vintage in Marsala, Sicily, where I worked for Trentino based company Concilio.
My highlights include James Halliday’s five stars (twice) plus the ‘Dark Horse’ award in the 2012 edition (with six wines above 94 points) and being named the most successful producer in 2003, 2004 at Swan and 2005 at Mt Barker. However, my singular and major highlight was the Dr Gladstone trophy for ‘Best and Most Regionally Distinctive Wine’ for 2005 Verdelho.
Lamont’s is best defined by the sparkling Cabernet Sauvignon, Quartet and Navera. I think I am best defined by the Black and White Monsters – the 2009’s my pick.
My philosophy is whatever is in the interest of the wine is first, followed by the interest of the company. I won’t sleep till the wines are protected, I won’t bottle till the wine is ready and I won’t release a wine that doesn’t live up to the Lamont’s brand.
The opportunity to work with the best fruit sourced from the region where it’s grown best is the strength of the brand. From Mt Barker Riesling, Margaret River Chardonnay to Donnybrook Malbec and Swan Valley Verdelho, all premium, regional and varietal wines.
I’m proud of the Lamont’s portfolio of wines and I hope you enjoy drinking them as much as I enjoy making them…… no – as much as I enjoy drinking them!
Cheers
Digby Leddin.
