About Our Wine

Jack Mann

"You can exist without wine but you cannot live..." Jack Mann

Encouraged by Corin Lamont's late father, Jack Mann, Lamont's was established by the family in 1978 with an ethos of producing full flavoured table and fortified wines. The estate grown vineyard has just over 5 hectares of vines, this now only makes up 50% of Lamont's grape supply.

Jack Mann is recognised in the history of Western Australia as a winemaker who made the greatest contribution to the State's wine industry. His passion and creative genius has left a powerful legacy as he endeavoured at all times to produce wines of the highest standard that were often way ahead of their time.

Jack Mann was born in Perth in 1906 and at age 15 became his father's apprentice at Houghton Winery in the Swan Valley. Jack worked continuously for 51 vintages at Houghton, retiring in 1972.

Following Jack's retirement, he encouraged his daughter Corin and son-in-law Neil Lamont to replace the currants and table grapes on their Millendon property with wine grapes. The intention was that Jack would show Corin how to make wine for the family to drink.

The first vintage at Lamont Winery was a Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978. The following year produced a blended white made from Verdelho, Semillon and Muscadelle, then named White Burgundy.

Jack's partnership with Corin in making wine continued until his death in 1989 at the age of 83.

This legendary character was renowned for his provocative wit and humour. Throughout this long and happy life Jack espoused the view that nature made wine, not man.

"Winemaking is entirely a natural process. Nature is the winemaker and man, if he is skilled, gives nature the opportunity to perform to best advantage. That is the art of winemaking."
